Job Description and Duties
Under the direction of the Supervisor of the Infrastructure Transition Unit, the Electric Generation System Specialist I (EGSS I) serves as part of interdisciplinary and interdivisional teams to plan and implement the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) programs. The EGSS I performs complex engineering, statistical, and economic analyses of advanced and emerging energy systems and technologies including energy storage technologies and their safety, performance, and integration with the energy system. The EGSS I performs independent, varied, and complex technical and analytical work focused on technologies and strategies for transitioning energy infrastructure; advancing energy storage and other emerging energy technologies; improving system safety, integrity, and reliability; decarbonizing the energy system; and advancing technologies and strategies that provide grid, ratepayer, and other public benefits. This work supports the development and implementation of the state’s energy policies and objectives, including decarbonization, electrification, energy affordability, safety, reliability, and equity. The EGSS I may serve as a project lead for other technical and analytical staff.
The Energy Research and Development Division deploys over $200 million annually to advance new scientific approaches and technology innovations to meet the state’s clean energy and climate change policies, including, but not limited to, the areas of renewable energy supply, building and industrial decarbonization, sustainable transportation, energy storage, energy distribution, resilience and reliability, and carbon management.
The Energy Systems & Transportation Branch (ESTB) supports the development of emerging technologies to enable a clean, reliable, and affordable energy system. The Infrastructure Transition Unit advances technologies that cost-effectively accelerate the clean energy transition from fossil gas and improve the safety and equity of energy delivery and storage systems while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
