Job Description and Duties
Department of Water Resources (DWR) Southern Region Office (SRO) Hydrological Data Section is seeking Water Resources Technician II who enjoys multidisciplinary, hands-on, challenging, and rewarding work in a team-oriented environment. The position will support hydrologic data collection and monitoring, field instrumentation installation and maintenance, State Water Project monitoring, and Dam Safety Services activities, while supporting a wide variety of projects across DWR and contributing to a reliable, sustainable, and resilient water supply.
Under the supervision of the Senior Engineer, Water Resources, Hydrological Data Section, the incumbent will perform technical hydrologic monitoring, data collection, equipment installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities. Responsibilities will include calibrating water meters; installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing stream-gaging stations and hydrologic monitoring equipment; conducting streamflow measurements and groundwater-level monitoring; and reviewing and processing Well Completion Reports for accuracy and completeness.
The incumbent will maintain accurate records of monitoring locations, equipment maintenance, field measurements, and related hydrologic data. The incumbent will also use applications such as Online System for Well Completion Reports (OSWCR), California Statewide Groundwater Elevation Monitoring (CASGEM), and Hydstra to enter, process, and quality-control hydrologic data. The position will involve hands-on fieldwork using hand and power tools for equipment assembly and fabrication, drilling, anchoring, concrete placement, and installation of sensors, conduit, piping, enclosures, and other monitoring infrastructure.
The incumbent will also support State Water Project monitoring and Dam Safety Services in coordination with the Division of Operations and Maintenance, Southern Field Division, and Castaic Field Division. This work will include instrumentation, monitoring, inspections, data collection, and other technical field assignments.
You will find additional information about the job in the Duty Statement.
Special Requirements
Applicants must possess a valid California Driver License. The incumbent must be able to operate four-wheel-drive vehicles on and off public roadways and over rugged terrain; travel throughout Southern California and occasionally elsewhere, including extended workdays and overnight stays; lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; work in confined spaces; and safely perform field activities on uneven, inclined, slippery, rocky, muddy, or wet terrain. Duties may also require using hand and power tools to install, maintain, and repair hydrologic and monitoring equipment.
Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Seeking a candidate with experience in hydrologic monitoring, streamflow and groundwater measurements, water meter calibration, and the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of field monitoring equipment.
The candidate should be proficient in using hand and power tools and comfortable performing hands-on fieldwork, including equipment installation and assembly, drilling, anchoring, and minor concrete work. Experience supporting State Water Project facilities, dam safety monitoring, instrumentation, or similar water resources field activities is highly desirable.
The candidate should be detail-oriented, demonstrate sound judgment and initiative, work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and maintain regular and reliable attendance. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based mapping applications, are also desired.
